STEAMBOAT SPRINGS OPENS FOR SUMMER 2005 FULL OF CHOICES Events fill every weekend this June including a marathon, 24-hour bike race, rodeo, music and more STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO - Take down the ski rack and make room for the bikes and kayaks because the official opening of summer of Steamboat Springs is right around the corner. More than just a winter ski destination, Steamboat Springs in the summertime offers real choices when it comes to events and activities for everyone seeking a cool mountain getaway in the Rocky Mountains. Week One: For a real town welcome, the traditional start of summer begins with the 24th Annual Steamboat Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K Sunday, June 5. Described as one of the most scenic marathons, 500 marathon runners will descend 1,400 feet from Hahn's Peak Village to Steamboat Springs, and 900 half-marathoners will compete along some of Colorado's most scenic roadways and finally they are cheered on at the finish by locals and visitors alike. Registration for the Marathon and 10K run can be done online at www.active.com or on Friday and Saturday at Christy Sports in Central Park Plaza. Week Two: Real adventure seekers in the form of mountain bikers and kayakers will take the town June 10-12 with the 25th Annual Yampa River Festival in downtown Steamboat Springs and the 2nd Annual Rio 24 Hours of Steamboat mountain bike race at the Steamboat Ski Area. Boaters and spectators can check out the Yampa River Festival, June 10-12, a local kayak festival in downtown Steamboat Springs. This event celebrates Steamboat Springs' river culture with several kayaking events and the popular crazy river dog contest on the Yampa River. Back by popular demand, Steamboat's own 24-hour mountain bike race, dubbed "the climb of your life," is expecting to cap at 500 riders this year. Starting at noon, solo and team mountain bikers will strive to complete as many laps as possible in 24 hours. Whether a participant or a spectator, visitors will witness first hand some of Steamboat Springs' finest summer amenities. Week Three: For real family fun on Father's Day, offer dad a weekend with horsepower! The Steamboat Springs Rodeo Series begins Friday night, June 17. Voted the 2002 Small Town Rodeo of the Year, the Steamboat Springs Rodeo Series is one of the most popular summer activities the whole family can experience Friday and Saturday nights through August 20, 2005. During the day, take dad to see a horse of another breed with the 17th Annual Mustang Roundup June 17-19. More than 400 Ford Mustang owners show off their pride and joy with the Autocross timed event Friday at the Meadows Lot on Mt. Werner Road and "Show and Shine" Saturday in downtown Steamboat Springs. The Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert series kicks off for the 2005 season Friday, June 24th with the roots reggae sound of Steel Pulse. For the athletically inclined, the Steamboat Springs Running Series presents the 14th Annual Spring Creek Memorial trail run. This race includes a 9-mile event on a challenging and scenic up and down loop of primitive trail, single track, two-track and forest service road with over 1000 feet of climbing, and a 3-mile and 1 mile run/walks are on rolling two-track and single track.
