Got Tour Fever? Steamboat Springs brings in new events to remedy that condition

The Tour de Steamboat will challenge cyclists and benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation August 13, while several other events make Steamboat Springs a destination for runners and triathletes

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO - Steamboat Springs, known world wide for its winter sports opportunities, will take its athletic prowess to a new level this August.  Events new and old will challenge runners, cyclists and triathletes as Steamboat Springs tries to push beyond its reputation of its moniker, Ski Town, USA® into a new era of summer athletic events.

The 11th Annual Mt. Werner Classic, 12-mile trail run, 5-mile trail run, 5-mile hike
August 6, Presented by the Steamboat Springs Running Series
This trail run is one of the most popular races of the Steamboat Springs Running Series.  All participants start at the base of the Steamboat Ski Area and climb up gaining 2,180 feet in the 5-mile run and 3,472 feet in the 12-mile.  Both courses use a combination of cat tracks and single-track trails winding through the aspen across ski runs with wildflowers and offer spectacular views of the Yampa Valley.  The 12-mile race will reach the top of Storm Peak at 10,372 feet before returning to the Thunderhead building at 9,080 feet where all three events finish.  For more information visit www.runningseries.com.

New!  Kent Eriksen's Tour de Steamboat
August 12-13, Presented by Rocky Peak Productions
After the success of their first event, the Rio 24 Hours of Steamboat, Rocky Peak Productions presents the first annual revival of Kent Eriksen's Tour de Steamboat. Bike manufacturer Kent Eriksen organized this popular annual event (1975-1985) that attracted top riders from Colorado mountain towns including pro-cyclist Alexi Grewal.  This year's non-competitive century ride brings cyclists through Northern Colorado's most scenic roadways, starting and ending in Steamboat Springs.  Friday night's dinner, a benefit for the Lance Armstrong Foundation features former pro-cyclist Andy Hampsten. New! The Wild West Relay
August 19-20, Presented by Timberline Events
In its first year, the Wild West Relay will dare over 600 runners to "Get their ass over the pass" in teams of 6 or 12.  Taking advantage of the full moon, this unique relay event will start in Fort Collins at the Budweiser Tour Center, and wind through rural and isolated sections of Northern Colorado and Wyoming, passing through several small mountain and ranching communities, cross over Sand Creek Pass (10,269 feet) and Rabbit Ears Pass (9,426 feet).  Sixty-seven miles of the relay route traverse through Roosevelt, Medicine Bow, and Routt National Forests; 59 miles of the route are on dirt roads.  The last leg of the relay is primarily on bike paths and trails through Steamboat Springs, with the finish line at the Steamboat Springs Middle School.  For more information visit www.wildwestrelay.com.

The 7th Annual Continental Divide Run, 16-mile trail run
August 21, Presented by the Steamboat Springs Running Series
This challenging trail race through the Routt National Forest begins at Fish Creek Falls, climbs to the scenic Mountain View Trail reaching a peak of 10,500 feet before descending the upper mountain portion of the Steamboat Ski Area where the race finishes at the top of the Gondola.  For more information visit www.runningseries.com.

New! The Steamboat Triathlon
August 28, Presented by 5430 Sports
Runners, cyclists and swimmers can head to Steamboat Springs to compete thanks to Boulder, Colorado based 5340 Sports who presents the first Steamboat Triathlon.  The race will include a three-quarter-mile swim, a 20-mile bike ride and a four-mile run in the Lake Catamount area, just south of the City of Steamboat Springs.  For more information visit www.5430sports.com.
